Each piece goes through many stages. Initially cut out of a log with a chain saw and rough carved to establish the basic shape. It is then set aside to dry for 6-12 months to assure that it is stable. The piece will change shape with the drying process, so that the final steps require 5 levels of re-shaping and sanding to bring it to a finished piece.
The design of each bowl is unique as it follows the shape, features and story being told by the log from which it was carved. By working with both sapwood and interior heartwood strong contrasts can be captured. Individually carving means that extraordinary patterns can guide the process so as to include the connections of branches into the main trunk or the grafted connection of tree varieties
It is our hope that by combining artful designs within a functional piece, each of these bowls will perform two roles. First, they can become part of the home's decor. Second, these are designed for durability to permit them to be regularly used as serving pieces. We always use food safe finishes with that dual goal in mind.
