Nicasio Woodworks is the collaboration of husband and wife team, Patrick McDonnell and Barbara Contini.  The award winning, hardwood products are made in our small workshop in western Marin County California. We seek out beautiful wood and then sculpt the pieces to both highlight the unique features to create something that is attractively functional. With a commitment to sustainability.

Reclaimed Wood

Almost all of the wood we use is reclaimed.  It is acquired  from trees that may be lost during storms or are removed as part of local land management or orchard renewals.  This search for interesting and dramatic wood is always ongoing, and some of our best finds were from people letting us know about trees that fell or are being removed.

Wood Care

There are only three important care issues for any wood product. Do not soak in water for any length of time, avoid heat and be careful around abrasive surfaces. All of our serving pieces that are intended for food contact are finished with a food grade oils and waxes. After use, rinse the piece and then thoroughly dry. While the finish should last for years, if the luster fades after an extended period of time, it can be renewed with any food safe oil (e.g. butcher block oil, mineral oil, walnut oil, bees wax, etc.). One consideration is that olive oil can dry and cake, creating a harbor for microbes. Therefore, if olive oil is used, wash it off periodically. Cuts and scratches that may arise with use and time can be removed with very fine sandpaper and then the piece can be re-oiled.
