Finishes on all pieces take into account their intended use. All serving pieces and toys are finished with food safe oils and waxes, such as walnut oil, mineral oil or tung oil. They will generally have a final layer of bees wax applied to bring out the features and insure a great feel to the wood. Furniture will variously be finished with multiple layers of tung oil or polyurethane based finishes. Finishes are all applied in multiple coats to insure resilience before a final layer of beeswax is applied.
Wood bowls, cutting boards and salad tongs are intended for regular use. To clean, they should be quickly rinsed or wiped with a damp cloth and then dried.
With regular use, over time, the oil finish on some products may need to be replenished. The simplest approach is to use any of several food safe products, such as walnut oil, mineral oil or other products sold as "butcher block oil". Prior to applying these oils, a thorough cleaning of the wood piece should be done with a plastic scrubbing pad or extremely fine steel wool. Avoid the use of oils that leave sticky residues, such as olive oil, as they will build up and can become a home for bacteria and diminish the "feel" of the wood.
Cheese and bread boards will inevitably show cuts and scratches if sharp knives are used on them. For some people, this is part of the charm of using wood. However, if it is a problem, most small scratches can be removed by the use of a very fine sandpaper (320+ grit) followed by the use of a very fine steel wool (0000 grade). If you are local, you can always bring a piece back to us and we will be happy to refinish it.
If you have any questions, or problems with your piece, contact us. It is important to us to know of any problems people experience with our pieces, so please let us know of any issues. We will be happy to help bring the piece back to its original condition.
