Each piece goes through many stages. Initially cut out of a log with a chain saw it is then rough carved to establish the basic shape. It is then set aside to dry for 6-12 months to assure that it is stable. The piece will change shape with the drying process, so that the final steps require 5 levels of re-shaping and sanding to bring it to a finished piece.
The design of each bowl is unique as it follows the shape, features and story being told by the log from which it was carved. By working with both sapwood and interior heartwood strong contrasts can be captured. Individually carving means that extraordinary patterns can guide the process so as to include the connections of branches into the main trunk, the grafting of tree varieties and displays arising from unique environmental conditions.
It is our hope that these bowls will be regularly used as serving pieces for salads or displays. Our buyers often tell us they become part of their home decor. We always use food safe finishes with that dual goal in mind. As they are made from durable hardwood, they will last for many years .
Bowls are priced according to their size, design and the features the bowl presents. Smaller bowls typically range from $110 - $160, medium bowls range in price from about $150 - $250, with the largest bowls generally ranging from $275 - $500. Specialized pieces, or larger catering sized bowls are priced individually.
